Vandalism during celebrations for Vardar

Causing national, racial or religious hate, discord or intolerance

What happened: On 02.06.2019, in the period between 8:10 and 11:50 p.m., in Skopje, on the “Macedonia
Square”, a public gathering (celebration) took place to celebrate the victory of the Handball Club Vardar.
During the celebrations, it was reported that an Audi A3 vehicle, with Skopje licence plates, was damaged
on the Goce Delcev Blvd. The vehicle was damaged by several individuals who threw becaton tiles on it.
During the incident, F.M. (18) suffered bodily injury. On 11ti Oktomvri Street, in front of the Assembly of
RNM, Chevrolet Spark vehicle, ownership of MOI, was also damaged. In relation to the incident, the Special
Forces Alfa detained five minors, aged 14 to 17, all from Skopje.

Perpetrator(s): Several perpetrators, six identified, five of whom underage.
Brief description of the event with bias indicators: In this incident the bias motive is ethnicity, with the bias
indicators being:
1. Ethnicity – while celebrating a Macedonian ethnic sports club, the fans chanted slogans against
the Albanian community and damaged vehicles from Kosovo;
2. Location – similar incidents were previously registered on the “Macedonia Square”.

Status of case: Closed.
Response of the local authorities: The damaged decided not to press charges.
Impact on the victims and the community: These types of incidents call into question the general safety in
the country and the co-existence among different ethnic groups in society, and reflect particularly poorly
on children’s development and safety.
